My first teaching job was in a small school with predominantly Spanish speaking students. Since I am bilingual, the district assumed I would be able to teach them English. Boy, were they wrong! I had no idea what I was doing.

I had lots of enthusiasm...and very few strategies.

So I started to learn, and read and try things in my classroom. And then I got a new job, where all the students were native English speakers. But that didn't mean that they had strong vocabularies. So, I kept learning.

After more than 30 years of teaching vocabulary, one thing I know for sure - students don't learn vocabulary because we hand them a list of definitions.

They learn vocabulary because they use it, talk about it, see it repeatedly, and connect it to meaningful learning.

I'd love to share 10 simple vocabulary routines with you.

These are routines I've used (and refined) over the years to help students move beyond memorizing definitions and make vocabulary words stick!

One of my favorite routines is Examples and Non-examples. This is a simple routine that you can do on the spur of the moment.

PE teacher running late? Play Examples and Non-examples.

Technology failed you? Play Examples and Non-examples! (I think you get the idea!)

One thing I've learned....

If you're waiting for the 'perfect' vocabulary lesson, don't. The most powerful vocabulary routines are often the simplest: they invite students to think deeply, speak precisely, and connect ideas in meaningful ways.
