Emma stopped at one poster....

Hey Reader,

Maybe you've noticed it too. Students are reading fewer books now than they used to. As a classroom teacher for over 30 years, I have watched this with tears in my heart. So many times in my life, a book has come along and been just the friend that I needed.

When I taught 5th grade, I wanted my classroom to constantly remind students that books could make them laugh, cry, wonder, travel, imagine, dream, and give them hope in dark times. Students deserve to experience books that stay with them and become friends. I created these Quote Posters to help my students see books in a new light.

One day I found Emma staring at this poster. She asked about the quote, and I showed her the book. She read that book 3 times that year. Something in it just spoke to the moment for Emma. That's what I want for ALL students!

Speaking of favorite books, what is your favorite read aloud to start the year? I always love to start with "Loser" by Jerry Spinelli - so full of wit and wisdom and life lessons. It is one of those books that sets the tone for the year.
